Stockton’s Wing to headline major West Cork Uilleann Pipe and Trad Festival in June.

In the 19th century world famous author William Makepeace Thackeray wrote of the Glengarriff area …

There is a country, the magnificence of which no pen can give an idea. I would like to bring a train of painters to Glengarriff to make, if they could … a set of pictures of the place.

He wasn’t the only famous person to fall in love with Glengarriff. From William Wordsworth to William Butler Yeats, artists from many countries were among those enchanted by its beauty, a beauty which is undiminished to this very day.

Glengarriff is the perfect place for one of the great music festivals of Ireland – the Jim Dowling Uilleann Pipe & Trad Festival 2017 to be held from the 15th till the 18th of June. The small village of 800 people provides a king sized welcome to musicians and music lovers alike for concerts, sessions, workshops, exhibitions and lectures. Why not plan now for a break away in June with magnificent music in the magnificent setting of Glengarriff.

The transformation of Glengarriff on June 15/18th

For four glorious days in June, Glengarriff will be transformed into the centre of a great musical party. The town’s many wonderful pubs and restaurants, the town hall, even Garinish Island itself will provide a plethora of stages for some of the finest Uilleann pipers and traditional musicians from Ireland and abroad.

Stockton’s Wing, celebrating their 40th anniversary, will headline the festival. Among the many other superb acts; Dubhlinn, Connla and the Anxo Lorenzo Trio. Anxo, a piper from Galicia in northern Spain is said to be a truly exhilarating performer “his fast fingers tracing ridiculously intricate melodies; when top gear is reached it’s impossible to fathom how a human brain can actually work that fast”. (Nige Tassell 2010).

Blackie O’Connell will be there. So too; Rónan Ó Snodaigh, Sean McKeon, Liam O’Connor, Steve Cooney, Cór Cúil Aodha and many more including Caoimhin 0’Fearaghail, Caroline Keane, Tom Oakes & Kathryn Nicoll, Emer & Tadgh Twomey, Eoin Neff and Cyrll O’Donoghue.

And many of the best will gather for the amazing The BigBlowOut concert to be held on Saturday 17th at 8pm.

With the backing of the Arts Council, Cork County Council, RTE and others the 5th Jim Dowling Uilleann Pipe and Trad Festival in Glengarriff is bound to be the best yet.

It’s clear that WB Yeats must have had Glengarriff in mind when he wrote “There are no strangers here, only friends you haven’t yet met”.
