Phillip Harrington Memorial Swim
The first annual Philip Harrington Memorial Swim will take place in Glengarriff on August 2nd. this year. This fundraising event in aid of local Scoil Fhiachna is sure to attract a large entry and attendance. It is named after a very well known and loved character Phillip Harrington who sadly passed away at a young age a number of years ago. He was the owner of the world famous Blue Loo Bar and also was involved in the Blue Pool Ferry, both activities giving him a very high profile locally. The swim is a fitting tribute to him as he was a great lover of the water himself and a very strong swimmer in his time.

Glengarriff In Running For Top Tourist Town
There is a Fáilte Ireland competition for Top Tourist Town which is being run in conjunction with the Tidy Towns Competition. Glengarriff was invited to take part in the initial entry of 100 centres and on the basis of our application and criteria thus far, we are now in the final 15. The second stage of the competition will now commence with adjudicators visiting each location to assess the overall experience offered to visitors. This will be an undercover visit possibly staying overnight and visiting local attractions, bars, shops etc. The impression given to the adjudicator will be the deciding factor in the awarding of the prizes. Let’s try and keep up our usual good Glengarriff standard as this accolade could be a real boost to our marketing efforts.

The Ewe Experience charity tea party
The Ewe Experience gardens in Glengarriff are having the annual charity tea party today Saturday June 7th from 1 to 5pm. All the funds will go to the Rural Animal Welfare Resources (RAWR), a charity benefitting animal welfare. “This a great local group, which we are happy to support with our annual tea party, where all the income on the day will go directly to the group,” says Sheena Wood, co-owner of The Ewe Experience, the popular West Cork destination.
“This year we are also celebrating coming of age in our 21st year of running The Ewe Experience here in Glengarriff, after the first ten years at the Mizen,” says Sheena. RAWR is a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit charity that believes in caring for all animals. The people involved give their time willingly to help RAWR achieve its goals to educate the community, to protect and enhance the welfare of all animals and to understand its influence on the habitat, shared by people and animals.

Metting Of Kenmare/Glengarriff/Beara Tourism Group
There has been an ongoing project in regard to developing a Tourism Cluster encompassing the whole of Beara and in this regard a number of meetings took place in the latter part of 2013. Wide ranging discussions have taken place place at these meetings and also note that the next meeting of the cluster group will be held locally at The Glengarriff Park Hotel on Wednesday next 22nd @7.00 pm. This is in keeping with the arrangement of moving the meeting through the region and also give an opportunity for each centre to focus on what they wish to see adressed. It is important therefore that there is a good attendance locally at this meeting as it will give a chance to get up to speed on developments to date and also to raise any local issues which could be adressed as part of the work of the group.

It appears to be a crying shame that from the Port of Cork list of cruise ships arriving at Glengarriff that surely the people on board should be given a chance to see Glengarriff and shop there and go to Bantry etc. during their visit instead of concentrating on their visit to Killarney. For goodness sake, when will West Cork cop on and give their visitors to their shore first choice or are the papers not telling the truth from what I am reading. Even half of the day should be given to a tour around on the same bus that takes them to Killarney. Its very selfish and mean if the tourists are dropped off in Killarney to Shop. Glengarriff has lovely shops stuff too and should pursue those buses to stop off in CORK …. there is a huge opportunity lost here. Maybe a few of the Cork buses could come on board and do their thing for West Cork for a change. Now the Port of Cork will have a list of the proposed cruise ships… they don’t just “call” over night without notice. someone in West Cork has to get this right for West Cork
