Kenmare Road Closure Update
The following is a statement that was received from Kerry County Council regarding the proposed roadworks at Bonane.

“Kerry County Council received € 1.45m for pavement rehabilitation works on the N71 at Killabunane and Releagh (approx 2km south of Bonane) to Letterduane (approximately 2 km north of Bonane). The carriageway is in particularly poor condition and has been the subject of a number of motions moved by our members to have the road repaired. It would be desirable to have the works completed in advance of the main tourist season.

There are sections of the existing road where the carriageway width is restricted to 4m and it may not be possible to carry out all the works whilst keeping the road open to through traffic. We are currently preparing the design for the works and the successful tenderer will be required to submit a traffic management plan.

In the event that the successful tenderer for the works requires a road closure, it would be our intention to limit the extent of the road closure to the minimum necessary, having regard to any submissions received, following the statutory public consultation process, pursuant to Section 75 of the Roads Act, 1993 and the Temporary Closing of Roads Regulations 1994.

It is our policy to limit roadworks on the tourist routes in Kerry during the peak tourist season and we are hoping to have the works substantially complete by the end of May.

Please let us know your reactions to this asap and if you wish to make a direct submission on this matter then email roads@kerrycoco.ie with your views.

Kenmare Road To Close
We have been informed today that the National Roads Authority intend to close the  N71 road from Glengarriff to Kenmare  for a period of  7-8 weeks in June/July this year.  This is to facilitate remedial works at Bonane.  This will have a catastrophic effect on tourist traffic through Glengarriff in what is supposed to be high season.  There is an information meeting in Kenmare tomorrow-Friday at 11am in Kenmare Library.  It is important that Glengarriff is represented at this meeting to voice strong opposition to this totally unacceptable proposal.

The family of the late Tony O Mahony have asked us to put up this post as an acknowledgement to everyone who supported them in their recent sad loss. Tony’s sudden death on Christmas Eve last, was a tragedy for his wife Audrey, daughter Louise and her partner Alex and Tony’s grandson Jamie, together with Tony’s father Paudie, his sisters Rose and Elizabeth and his brothers John and Patrick.  His family wishes to thank all of those who called to the house, attended at the Rosary and Removal and in particular the large crowd who attended the Requiem Mass and Funeral.

Tony will be sadly missed by his family, together with his work colleagues in The Harbour Queen Ferry, as well as his many fans and followers who met him in his music career.  He will also be remembered for the help and support that he gave to Glengarriff Tourism & Development Association and in particular the Tidy Towns.

Media Reports Regarding The Death Of A Sea Eagle Locally.
We have had enquiries regarding the recent media reports of the death of one of the White Tailed Eagles locally.  This is the statement that has been supplied to us by the NPWS.

White-tailed Sea Eagle found dead in Co Cork

A White-tailed Sea Eagle found dead on the sea shore near Glengarriff Co. Cork has been found to have been poisoned. The bird, a female eagle released in Killarney National Park, Co. Kerry, in August 2010 as part of the reintroduction programme for the species, had spent much of 2012 in south Kerry before moving to the Beara peninsula between Adrigole and Glengarriff in December 2012. On 18 January she was discovered by a local man on the water’s edge near Glengarriff having apparently been washed up there. The bird was subsequently brought for post-mortem to the Regional Veterinary Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine by staff from the National Parks and Wildlife Service based in Glengarriff. Test results from the State Laboratory, Celbridge revealed that the bird had been poisoned, presumably as a result of eating carrion. Earlier in the week another dead eagle had been found at Derrynane, near Caherdaniel, Co. Kerry but it was not possible to determine the cause of death of this bird.

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, said ‘The poisoning of an eagle in County Cork is very serious. Eagles are protected by law, they are majestic birds of prey, and their reintroduction to Ireland is an important and very worthwhile project. My Department is providing any assistance it can to the Gardaí in the investigation of this matter.

“Illegal poisoning continues to be a problem for the eagle population throughout Ireland. Last year we lost two birds to poisoning in Mayo and Donegal so this latest loss suggests that the problem hasn’t gone away”, said Dr. Allan Mee, Project Manager of the White-tailed Eagle Reintroduction. “Over the last few years we feel we have made good progress in tackling the poisoning problem in Kerry, with the cooperation of the farming organisations and Teagasc, so we are disappointed to lose another bird to poisoning. We realise that landowners have in the past used poison to control crows and foxes especially around lambing time. However, we would like to remind people that use of poisons or other substances for the control of foxes and crows is now illegal. Thanks to the cooperation of Kerry IFA, ICMSA, Teagasc and the DAFM we produced and distributed an advice leaflet to all sheep farmers in South Kerry and West Cork in 2011 and 2012. Everyone should now be well aware of the ban on poisons and the danger posed to wildlife, farm dogs and pets by their use. There are viable alternatives to the use of poisons and the vast majority of farmers now use these effectively to avoid losses at lambing time.”

White-tailed Eagles nested in Ireland for the first time in over 100 year in 2012 when a pair laid eggs in a nest in Co. Clare. Although this nest failed to hatch a chick, hopes are high that 2013 will be the breakthrough year for the reintroduction project. “We know of six pairs that could build nests and breed in Ireland in 2013, including four pairs in Kerry, one in Clare and one in Galway”, Dr. Mee commented. “We hope that one or more of these pairs will nest and produce chicks which will be the first Irish hatched eagles in over 100 years. This would be the start of what we hope will be the next and most critical phase of the reintroduction: establishing a small but viable breeding population. As we are no longer releasing birds into the wild it is vital that we now start producing our own chicks in the wild to replace any birds that are lost and maintain the population.  We are hoping that this year will be a milestone for the reintroduction project”.

Notes for Editors

The White-tailed Eagle, Golden Eagle, and Red Kite Reintroduction Projects in the Republic of Ireland are managed by the Golden Eagle Trust in partnership with the National Parks & Wildlife Service of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in the Republic of Ireland.

A total of 100 White-tailed Sea Eagles have been released in Killarney National Park, Co. Kerry (2007-2011) as part of the release phase of the reintroduction programme. Twenty six eagles have been recovered dead since the reintroduction programme began in 2007. Twelve White-tailed Eagles have been confirmed as having been poisoned. The first breeding attempt of the reintroduction programme was a pair that nested on Lough Derg, Co. Clare in 2012. At least six pairs could potentially nest in 2013.

Musician Looking For A Venue
We received this request from a musician who is known here in Glengarriff. If anyone can facilitate him please contact him direct on his Website: www.morsgael.eu

I lived in the Pink Cottage in the forest there during 1972-74, with others including John Burke who went on to play as Enda Wyatt in An Emotional Fish. We
came down together in 2007 to launch our CD Veshengro. I now live and play music in Brittany, and I want to organise a tour with my 2 French musicians, to West
Cork from Nov 14 to 16, as part of The Gathering. Our group Morsgael plays Irish, Breton and Auvergnian music and songs, and is popular over here in France.I would really like to play one of our gigs in Glengarriff, and I would like to know if there is a venue that would be able to promote a gig. We have our own P.A. and our request would be a fee of 200 euros, bed and breakfast for the night of the gig, and a meal on the night of the gig. I am hoping that Johnny Burke will come down from Dublin, if we play on the Saturday. If you have a venue that might be interested, please let me know. Thank you for your time in reading this.

Death of Ed Koch former Mayor Of New York
The death was announced yesterday of Ed Koch who served as Mayor of New York City from 1977 to 1989.  In this period he is given credit for bringing about a sweeping upturn in the fortunes of the city which had been in serious economic crisis prior to that.  In October 1982 he visited Glengarriff and stayed as a house guest with Maureen O Hara at Lugdine House.  Whilst he was there a group of locals attended a reception in the house and a presentation was made to Mayor Koch.  Appropriately enough the presentation was a set of Glengarriff pattern Waterford Crystal. He was also presented with a Shillelagh which he looked at and commeted on its usefulness when chairing meetings of New York City Council.  It is sad to see that at least seven of the people in the above photograph have passed on and also how quickly the time has passed since then.

From L to R—-  John Guerin RIP, Maureen Downing, Helen Carey RIP, Anne Guerin, Joe O Sullivan RIP, Fr. John Shine RIP, Andrew O Shea, Mayor Ed Koch RIP, Michael Corkery (Area Engineer CCC), Maureen O Hara, Patrick Carey, Michael Manning (Cork/Kerry Tourism), Paudie Downing RIP, Donal O Shea, Michael Barry, ???Shaughnessy (Manager Eccles Hotel), Mary O Sullivan-Lavelle RIP, Mary Barry, Mrs. Shaughnessy.

2013 Begins On A High Jazzy Note
The New Year 2013 got off to a toe-tapping start for those who attended the “Jazz On A Winter’s Eve” at The Glengarriff Park Hotel on Friday last January 4th.  Local musicians The Hot Club Trio- Kevin O Shea, Declan O Shea and Ailbhe Connolly all of whom were home for a flying visit got together to present a wonderful evening of songs and melodies from the golden era of American music and they did not disappoint. Straight in from the two opening numbers Lullaby Of Birdlandand You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To they set the mood for a fun evening.  Ailbhe was on fine voice on those opening numbers and in her later readings of My Heart Belongs To Daddy and Is You Is Or Is You Aint My Baby.  Kevin was featured on It’s Been A Long Long Time, the soulful Dancing On The Ceiling and a lovely version of Frank Sinatra’s Young At Heart. Declan gave a great account of himself on Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea and the two guitars traded licks on a lovely instrumental version of I’m Confessin’. Thrown in the middle was a 3 number tribute to Fats Waller featuring Honeysuckle Rose, I’m Gonna Sit Right Down (And Write Myself A Letter) and Two Sleepy People all of which were shared between our three vocalists.

Part two opened with a tribute to The Mills Brothers with Kevin and Declan sharing the vocal on a very authentic recreation of Paper Doll.  Kevin sang the wistful Where Or When, together with playful versions of Walking My Baby Back Home and It’s Only A Paper Moon followed by a very effective performance of Pennies From Heaven.  Declan came back to the microphone and showed a fine vocal range on Days Of Wine And Roses and especially My One And Only Love.  A tribute to Django Reinhardt followed with the great guitarist’s instrumental Swing39/Swing42 getting a fine airing. Ailbhe came into her own with beautiful vocals on God Bless The Child followed by Fran Loesser’s No Moon At All and she closed the show with two numbers that she has really made her own The Nearness Of You and the great song by Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer-Skylark.  It was obvious that our talented trio were not going to get away without an encore and the duly obliged with a swinging instrumental on I’ll See You In My Dreams and again a lovely vocal from Ailbhe on Cry Me A River.  The Hot Club Trio have staged these events over the last three years and anyone who has attended will attest to the degree of professionalism and downright entertainment value to be had on the night.  It can only be said on behalf of their many fans locally and beyond—Thank you for a great evening of music and song and please do it again soon.
