Excellent One-Man Show at Glengarriff Park
A small but very privileged audience recently enjoyed a fine evening of theatre in the very comfortable facilities of The Glengarriff Park Hotel. “Betrayal” is a short one-man play scripted and acted by Bill Griffin, a native of Cork city, but now based in Allihes. The piece deals with the final years of Vincent van Gogh and takes the form of a monologue spoken from beyond the grave where van Gogh puts to right some of the myths regarding his life. The script is well written and though it has adult themes and references it never descends into vulgarity. Bill Griffin chooses to use his own accent, which works well, and does not try and effect a faux foreign accent. He also looks the part with his beard and hair together with straw hat and paint-spattered clothes. The unique aspect of the production is that Mr. Griffin is obviously a very talented painter also and for the duration of the piece he paints a picture whilst delivering his lines. The audience doesn’t see the painting until the end when it is revealed as a very accomplished work. All in all a very entertaining piece of 35 minutes or so duration—a further 10—15 minutes would flesh out the thing a bit better but other than that it is an effective and entertaining production. Look out for it if it returns locally.

New Accomodation Website
A new website to promote holiday accomodation throughout West Cork http://westcorkholidayaccommodation.com/ will shortly go live on the web. The venture which is being undertaken by a group of students in Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí is a welcome addition to the marketing effort and is a further valuable tool in promoting the accomodation sector locally. A number of the students promoting the venture recently gave a very good presentation on the proposal to a meeting of GT&DA and were most impressive in their approach. The site will shortly be going live and they are currently signing up advertisers to take space on it. €25 will get you an annual listing and you can contact the site diretly email@example.com or phone 0863030991 or print off and complete the simple application form below.

Recent Music Festival Weekend
The weekend was a great success, with visitors from far and wide and also great local support.
Wed 17th Oct. brilliant ‘warm up’ session at Bernard Harringtons Bar Glengarriff. Nice to see old friends and new friends there, Thomasin and Mike from Wales made a long trip to be there, great to see them.
Friday 19th Oct the start of the festival proper, Lots of songs and tunes with an inclusive session hosted by Free Spirit, lots of familiar faces plus visiting singers/musicians from as far afield as Yorkshire and beyond!
Sat 20th Oct saw the arrival of ‘THE DUTCHMEN’ (and Women) you have to see them to believe them, Irish songs, Sea Songs, Theatre You name it they do it! An amazing group of talented vocalists and musicians, who will be back in Glengarriff for the 2013 St Patricks Weekend Festival. Also Young talent at it’s best with performances from Aaron ‘banjo’ Buckley and Chloe Twomey. These 2 young people will go far with their music and song, Great to see them at the Festival. Our furthest travelers then entertained us, Rob and Ollie Willis from Forbes Australia, did a brilliant set, with songs and tales from the outback, accordion tunes and ukulele backing! The Wild Colonial Boy (and Girl) are back in town! Also a great set of songs from our own ‘Travelling Pipeline Man’ Steve Roche From Kanturk, Original songs and stories, and he is also a superb Bodhran player, as he showed in the later session, dueting with John Buckley (accordion) from Coolea County Cork. There were sessions in both bars, attended by local musicians including our good friend Dick Miles, who organizes The Fastnet maritime and folk festival, and is an internationally recognized concertina/guitar player and vocalist.
Sunday 21st Oct The young musicians set was a treat as always, with performances from the musical Buckley Family from Kilgarvan, Bodhran Buckley aged 6, Buttons Buckley aged 7 and Aaron ‘Banjo Buckley’ aged 12. Aaron was also joined by the future super Group ‘Super Strings’ Jonathan and Norah Cronin.Followed by Tunes from John Buckley and Jer (Jim) Kelleher. Friends John & Jer are accomplished Button accordion players, with unique styles of their own. From slow airs to jigs/reels and hornpipes, and also foot tapping waltz tunes. Cork and Kerry’s best!
During the day we were entertained by Marie in her Tiger costume, who painted some amazing faces, with a large outbreak of Tigers! Assisted by well known local artist Brian. Also a magic show by Mysterio the magician, (me! John Corteen ) , some people said there were echoes of the late great Tommy Cooper in the act, a real tribute.
The festival was ‘sung out’ by our great friends from Holland, ‘the Dutchmen’ under the leadership of their musical director Henk Vosse, including a performance from Niza Queen of the dessert, belly dancing as you have never seen it before! Followed by a late ‘join in’ session to finish the weekend off in style.
Thanks to all who helped to make the weekend so much fun, all performers take part purely for the love of music and craic, no one is paid including the organizers John & Marie Corteen
Thanks also to our host Bernard Harrington, without whom the event could not take place, he provides a welcoming and appreciative venue to musicians and singers, both locally and from around the world. A top place to play music and enjoy the craic.
Looking forward to next year already. The next event we will be hosting there is the FREE SPIRIT St Patrick’s weekend festival in the spring, it will be a 4 day extravaganza, with all of the above plus some surprise guests? Already confirmed are the Dutchmen, so if you missed them this time, be sure to catch them in March.
All the best John & Marie Corteen

Maureen O Hara in USA.
A number of people have enquired regarding Maureen O Hara since she left Glengarriff. This information was sent in to the website yesterday.
June Parker Beck wrote:
I am the editor/designer of the official Maureen O’Hara website which initiated

is buzzing with news and photos of Maureen and her career.
I am, however, writing this note to let the citizens of Glengarriff know that
Maureen is doing just fine since her return to the United States. She is living
in a lovely new home near her grandson, Conor FitzSimons in Boise Idaho and is
in high spirits. She gets to see her great grandchildren just about every day
and already seeing friends and family members she hasn’t seen in seven years.
Good medical attention is nearby and she’s getting physical therapy and other
services to help her with mobility.
I talk to her on the phone every day. In fact today we had a conference call
with one of her fans in Alabama who is very ill. Maureen always has words to
Be assured she misses Ireland and her friends in Glengarriff, but she knows for
this time in her life, she’s in the right place.
