With the boom in running all over Ireland, West Cork is no different and there are a lot of local runs happening throughout the year that you can choose from. There is the Bay Run Half Marathon which starts in Glengarriff and finishes in Bantry, and many other runs in Beara and the general area throughout the year.

If you just want to run for fitness and fun then Glengarriff is the perfect place, with fantastic trail and road routes just on your doorstep … so get out and enjoy!

You can also take part in the local parkrun which takes place in the Glengarriff Nature Reserve, just off the Kenmare Road about a mile outside Glengarriff.

parkrun is a FREE weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which takes place every Saturday at 9:30am. It is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that’s for fun or as part of a training plan.

As with all other parkruns the 5k course is run on a mixture of trail paths and tarmac paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

It offers an opportunity for everybody to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active into the bargain. We want to encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE!

Taking part is easy – just register before your first ever parkrun. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning and get yourself there!
